Acts by way of Apostolic Speeches
Teacher: Mark Dishman
Text: Bible
Class Approach: Lecture
If you were asked to name a speech which had impact on the lives of a large number of people how would you respond? Perhaps you would point to Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream". Maybe you would suggest "The Gettysburg Address" by Abraham Lincoln. Some of you may recall Franklin Roosevelt's "a date which will live in infamy". All of these speeches were given to particular audiences in the context of perceived adversity and served to inspire particular responses which profoundly influenced American culture.
The book of Acts records several speeches given by Apostles during the earliest years of the church. These addresses were powerful for more than just inspirational reasons. During this course we will explore these words and how they impacted those who presented them and the audiences who received them -- not to change the course of history but to fulfill God's redemptive plan, establishing and continuing the church through the very end of the age (Matt 28:19-20).

While you might be relieved to think that God has placed your sanctification only in the hands of trained church staff, that is not his plan. Instead, through the ministry of every part of the body, the whole church will mature in Christ. As inadequate as we are, God is eager to use us to help others change. This "all of my people, all of the time" model of personal ministry is the heart of this class. You will learn where change is needed in your own life and how you can effectively minister God's grace to others. This class is recommended for all, especially those in lay leadership positions (officers, teachers, etc.).
The Ten Commandments
Teacher: Pastor Saji George
Text: Bible
Class Approach: Lecture
If you have ever asked yourself "If I'm forgiven of all my sins, why would Icare about morality?", you're not alone. The importance of the 10 command- ments is unquestioned by virtually all Christians, but many are not entirely clear why they are important. For some, the commandments are our duty to God. For others, they are important to keep society from crumbling. The Ten Commandments are God's standard of holiness. In this class we will look at how the Ten Commandments, as a whole, fit in Christ's Gospel, we will examine each command- ment individually, and, finally, we will compare and contrast the ten commandments to other major schools of ethical thought.
