The Priority of Knowing God
A review from Tom Kistner
The Priority of Knowing God, with the subtitle, “Taking Time with God When There Is No Time” is a book written by Peter V. Deison, better known to us at Town North Presbyterian Church as Pastor Pete. This book is published by Kregel Publications.
This is a book that gets you down to the basics of both the meaning and practice of:- Loving God and loving others,
- Praying,
- Obtaining freedom from guilt with forgiveness
- Worshiping God
What I mean by "basics" is that this book tells you the exact meaning of these things, how to implement them, or - if appropriate - how to avoid or mitigate them. The book also tells you what to expect from God. Pastor Pete explains what love is and how to express it. He goes into detail on how to befriend God, exactly what prayer is and how to pray, and why we have guilt. Of course, he also discusses how to free yourself from guilt. The focus of the book is on how to know God and spend time with Him, even when your schedule is busy. This book not only tells you to spend time with God; it tells you the “how” and “why.” It also discusses what results should be expected.
Pastor Pete goes into how to worship God, why we worship, what it means to worship, and how we can worship at times other than Sunday morning. Finally, he ties this all together in how to live our lives in a practical way. You do not have to be a pastor to live your life for God, and Pastor Pete shows you the way. I am amazed at how well he fits the ideas in the book together. For example, he relates marriage to the meaning of loving God and loving others.
This is a book that everyone should "scan" first and then go back and study.
